BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia State rolled to a 4–0 Mountain East Conference win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at Culpepper Stadium, powered by a first-half flurry and a late insurance tally. Goalkeeper
Poppy Bastock made two saves for the clean sheet as the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MEC, while the Bobcats fell to 2-2-1, 1-2-0 in conference play.
State struck first at 17:02 when
Laura Pouedras finished a feed from Maria Alejandra Hernández Díaz. Sara París Fílter doubled the lead at 24:01, and
Ece Lea Evin made it 3–0 just 33 seconds into the second half (45:33) off a setup from
Maika Nchana Choni. Hernández Díaz capped the day with a strike at 87:36, assisted by
Aika Tobaru.
Bastock and the back line smothered WVWC's chances, allowing just four shots (two on frame) and no corners conceded after halftime. With today's shutout, Bastock's scoreless run moves to 230:59 of game action dating back to 39:01 of Game 3; she has not allowed a goal from the run of play in MEC play this season, with her lone goal against coming on a penalty kick.
State outshot the Bobcats 15–4 and generated seven saves from the WVWC keepers. Corner kicks finished 0–4 in favor of WVWC. Both teams were whistled for 11 fouls; WVWC saw one yellow card (44:00).
Individually, París Fílter tallied once (3 shots, 2 SOG), Hernández Díaz added a goal and an assist, Pouedras scored once, and Lea Evin chipped in another. Bastock worked the full 90:00 with 2 saves for the shutout.
State returns home to take on the Senators from Davis & Elkins College on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
