WVSU Softball splits with Lees-McRae on Day 1 of Fastpitch Dreams Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- On day one of the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic, West Virginia State and Lees-McRae College battled to a pair of one-run games at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex with each team taking one.

Game one: Lees-McRae 3, WVSU 2
Lees-McRae took an early lead with a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Allie Johnston. The Yellow Jackets briefly tied the game in the fifth when Kylie Price hit a sacrifice fly to score Kerigan Moore. Johnston responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run to give Lees-McRae a 3-1 lead. West Virginia State cut the deficit to one in the seventh when Sydney Shamblin scored on an error, but they were unable to push across the tying run. Autumn Hall pitched a complete game for West Virginia State, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Game two: WVSU 4, Lees-McRae 3
The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the third inning on a two-run triple by Jayde Baron followed by a sacrifice fly from Olivia Bell. They added another run in the fourth after a wild pitch allowed Autumn Hall to score. Lees-McRae answered with two runs in the fifth on a two-run, inside the park home run by Abby Hatley and pushed another across in the seventh on an RBI double by Taylor Beurrier. The Bobcats had runners on second a third with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Kaleigh Murphy induced a fly ball to Kerigan Moore in center field to close out the game for the win. Murphy pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

State will play their next two games in the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 9:00 am against the University of Pikeville.
