Contagious Hitting Pushes Yellow Jackets Past Pioneers In 2-Game Sweep

Institute, W. Va. -- West Virginia State erased an early deficit and defeated Point Park 11-6 in the opener of a doubleheader Sunday at Cal Bailey Field. After allowing three runs in the top of the first inning, WVSU responded with three of its own, highlighted by a two-run home run from Nathan Paulsen. The Yellow Jackets added four more in the second, capped by a two-RBI single from Connor Fizer, and never trailed again.

Kyle Waters went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while Fizer finished with three hits and three RBIs. Michael Bittinger and Tyler Overaitis each drove in two runs. Ayden Hodges earned the win, striking out eight across five innings. Hunter McSweeney and Brandon Morrison each tossed a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Yellow Jackets

West Virginia State completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in Game 2. Point Park scored five runs in the third inning, including a three-run homer by Chris Williams and a two-run shot from Isaac Santana. WVSU responded with three in the fourth, tying the game on a three-run home run by Fizer, his second of the season.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run from Waters and an RBI single by Nathan Paulsen. Aidan Paulsen added an RBI single in the sixth. Brian Lingenfelter pitched six innings, allowing five runs on six hits to earn the win. Morrison recorded his fifth save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Yellow Jackets will be back in action with a four-game home series against WV Wesleyan Saturday and Sunday, April 4th and 5th.
