State drops home doubleheader against UC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State was swept in a home doubleheader by the University of Charleston on Wednesday, falling 13-0 in five innings in Game 1 and 8-4 in Game 2. The Yellow Jackets have now dropped four straight games and seven of their last eight.

Game 1: WVSU 0, UC 13 (5 Innings)
In the opener, Charleston scored in each of the first three innings, including a five-run second and five-run third, and limited WVSU to no hits in a five-inning shutout. Lindsey Phares drove in six runs for the Golden Eagles, including a three-run home run in the third. Hannah Meyer added a solo homer. Addison Mass earned the win with a complete-game effort, striking out nine and walking three. Kaleigh Murphy took the loss, allowing five earned runs in one inning. Kelley Bickers allowed six runs in four innings of relief.

Game 2: WVSU 4, UC 8
WVSU opened the scoring with an RBI single from Emma Pauley in the first inning, but Charleston responded with two runs in the second and added two more in the fourth and fifth. Emily Bechtel hit a solo home run in the fifth, her first of the season, to start a three-run inning, and Olivia Bell drove in two more with a single. Charleston extended its lead with two unearned runs in the seventh. Autumn Hall was charged with the loss, allowing four earned runs in four innings. Chloe Elliot earned the win for Charleston, giving up four runs on nine hits in a complete game.
