INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University announced the return of Shannon Gerencir as head coach of its women's volleyball program on Friday.

"We're thrilled to welcome Coach Gerencir back to West Virginia State," said interim athletic director Sean McAndrews. "Her legacy here speaks for itself — from championship seasons to the impact she's had on her student-athletes. She brings unmatched experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of what it means to be a Yellow Jacket. We're excited for the future of the program under her direction."

"I am very happy to be home at West Virginia State and I look forward to the future of the program," Gerencir said.

Gerencir, the longest-tenured head coach in program history, previously led the Yellow Jackets from 2002 to 2015, compiling a program-record 207 career wins. During her first stint, she guided the team to two conference championships and two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. She was named WVIAC Coach of the Year in both 2005 and 2006, and her 2008 team went undefeated in conference play with a 15-0 record.

Gerencir most recently led Cabell Midland High School to a historic 2024 season, achieving the most wins in program history and securing the school's first Mountain State Athletic Conference championship. The team made its first appearance in the WVSSAC State Tournament in eight years, and she was named MSAC Coach of the Year.

She also served as head coach at Lock Haven University from 2016 to 2019 and has been coaching with Putnam Volleyball Club since 2019, where she has played a key role in developing regional talent.

Gerencir is expected to begin her duties immediately as she returns to lead the Yellow Jackets once again.
