WVSU Softball splits one-run games with Concord

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State split a doubleheader against Concord on Friday at Lady Jackets Field, taking the second game 4-3 after dropping the opener 3-2.

Game 1: WVSU 2, Concord 3
In the first game, WVSU took an early lead with a run in the first inning when Clarke Moore reached on an error and later scored on another miscue. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the second after Kaylee Byus singled home Autumn Hall. Concord responded in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a pair of errors to push across two runs, and added another in the seventh to secure the win. Kaleigh Murphy went the distance for WVSU, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

Game 2: WVSU 4, Concord 3
The Yellow Jackets rebounded in game two, scoring three runs in the third inning. Sydney Shamblin reached on a wild pitch after striking out, setting up a three-run rally that included a two-run double by Emma Pauley. WVSU added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Bell. Concord pulled within one after a run in the seventh, but Kelley Bickers recorded the save, stranding the tying run on base. Autumn Hall earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

State will welcome the Glenville State Pioneers for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
