Tobaru’s Free Kick Lifts State to South Division Championship

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State clinched the Mountain East Conference South Division championship with a 2–1 victory over Concord on Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 11–3–1 overall and 10–1–1 in MEC play, securing the division crown with 31 points to Concord's 21 and three matches remaining. The Mountain Lions fell to 7–5–3 overall and 6–3–3 in conference.

Leila Karam opened the scoring for WVSU in the 17th minute, netting her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Maria Alejandra Hernández Diaz. Concord drew level in the 21st minute on a WVSU own goal, but Aika Tobaru restored the lead in the 36th minute when she smoked a free kick from about 20 yards out for her second goal of the season.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Mountain Lions 11–8 overall and held a 4–3 advantage in shots on goal. Poppy Bastock made three saves in net for State, while Concord's Isabelle Melton recorded two.
