ELKINS, W.Va. — West Virginia State won against Davis & Elkins College on Wednesday night at Nuttall Field, 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets scored once in the first half, a Laura Pouedras strike from Leila Karam in the 18th minute, and once in the second half, an unassisted goal from Avril Amil Ruiz in the 86th minute.
WVSU outshot Elkins 9–2 in the first half, but an aggressive D&E attack saw the two teams tie the second half in shots, 8-8.
Maria Diaz, Amil Ruiz, and Karam led the Yellow Jackets attack with three shots apiece. Sara Paris Filter and Karam led with two shots on target. Karam had the lone helper by WVSU. Defensively, Poppy Bastock made four saves in earning her sixth clean sheet of the season.
WVSU improves to 10–3–1 overall and 9–1–1 in MEC play. Davis & Elkins falls to 1-8-5, 0-7-4 in the MEC.
State will return home for an afternoon tilt against Concord on Sunday, Oct. 26. Kickoff at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
