INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State rolled past Salem University, 9–0, on Sunday morning at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
The match was originally scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff, but was pushed up to 11:00 a.m. due to the threat of storms in the forecast.
The Yellow Jackets scored seven times in the first half and added two more after the break while holding the Tigers without a single shot. WVSU outshot Salem 30–0 and finished with a 15–0 edge in shots on goal.
Rachel Okoro recorded a hat trick with goals in the 16th, 22nd, and 26th minutes.
Ellise Rennie scored twice and added three assists, while
Ece Lea Evin contributed a goal and three assists.
Maika Nchana Choni, Hannah Aneley Nuñez Perreira, and
Leila Karam also found the back of the net.
Renata Castellanos started in goal before
Reygan White entered in the 63rd minute, combining for the team's second consecutive shutout. The match was terminated in the 73rd minute due to injuries suffered by Salem.
WVSU improves to 9–3–1 overall and 8–1–1 in MEC play. Salem fell to 1–12.
State will travel to Elkins on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Davis & Elkins Senators.
