INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University women's soccer (3-1-2, 2-0-1 Moutain East) put on a dominant performance, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan (1-4-0, 0-3-0 MEC) 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
West Virginia State dominated the match, outshooting West Virginia Wesleyan 33-5, with 12 shots on goal compared to Wesleyan's zero.
Sandra Linares led the offense with two goals, while
Ellise Rennie,
Leila Karam, and
Aika Tobaru each added one. The Yellow Jackets spread the assists around, with
Avril Amil Ruiz,
Karissa Vela,
Kinga Koronkiewicz,
Alba Closa, and
Ammy Mwasambu all contributing. WVSU also earned eight corner kicks, four in each half, while Wesleyan managed just one. Paula Garcia, Wesleyan's goalkeeper, made seven saves, but
Laura Galindo for WVSU recorded a clean sheet without needing to make a save.
Sandra Linares was the star of the first half, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes. Linares struck first in the 10th minute, assisted by
Avril Amil Ruiz and
Ellise Rennie. Just five minutes later, she found the net again, with assists from
Karissa Vela and
Kinga Koronkiewicz.
Ellise Rennie added a third goal in the 18th minute, converting a pass from
Alba Closa, and
Leila Karam extended the lead to 4-0 in the 27th minute with an assist from
Ammy Mwasambu.
The second half saw WVSU maintain control, with
Aika Tobaru capping off the scoring in the 80th minute.
State heads to Elkins for their next match on Wednesday, Sept. 25 against Davis & Elkins. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
