ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia State University cruised to a 3-0 win over Davis & Elkins at Nuttall Field on Wednesday, improving their record to 3-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Mountain East Conference. Davis & Elkins remained winless at 0-6-0 (0-4-0 MEC).
After a scoreless first half, WVSU's offense came alive in the second half.
Leila Karam opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, netting her third goal of the season with an assist from
Sandra Linares. Linares followed up with a goal of her own in the 55th minute—her third of the season—while
Avril Amil Ruiz sealed the victory with a strike in the 86th minute, her first goal of the year. The Yellow Jackets took 14 shots overall, with Linares putting three on target, and
Ellise Rennie and
Nagi Higashi adding additional pressure on goal.
On the defensive side,
Laura Galindo recorded her third consecutive shutout, making one save to keep Davis & Elkins scoreless.
Maxima Bellscheidt and
Billie Jean Davies both played full 90-minute stints in defense, helping limit the Senators to five total shots, only one of which was on target.
Davis & Elkins' Alexa Karsel had the lone shot on goal for the Senators, while goalkeeper Monica Birkelund was tested often, making eight saves but allowing three goals.
West Virginia State University will host the University of Charleston in the Kanawha River Derby on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets, riding a five-match unbeaten streak, look to continue their strong start to the MEC season in this fierce local rivalry.
