WVSU takes two at Wesleyan for a 75 percent eclipse of the series

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (19-11, 11-3 MEC) swept West Virginia Wesleyan (10-18, 5-9 MEC) in the second of two doubleheaders played at Hank Ellis Field on Monday night. The Yellow Jackets fell behind briefly in game one before righting the ship to win comfortably, 7-2. They never stumbled in game two and won convincingly, 9-1.

Game 1: West Virginia State 7, West Virginia Wesleyan 2, Final/7

The first game of the evening was won by State in the fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets put up six runs in the fifth to go ahead for good.

WVSU scored first in the top of the first. Tyler Overaitis singled, allowing Mike Huber to score from second base, 1-0.

Colin Bryant got the start for State and was able to hold the Bobcats scoreless through three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Wesleyan took the lead with back-to-back RBI-singles, 2-1.

Bryant was helped out by his teammates in the top of the fifth. Kyle Waters led off the inning with a triple before he was driven in by Ryan Kay with a single up the middle, 2-2. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Chris Morris doubled to bring two Yellow Jackets home, 4-2. An error by the left fielder allowed two more runs to come across, 6-2, before Cody Rinehart singled to right field to bat in the sixth run of the half inning, 7-2.

Bryant kept the Bobcats in check in the fifth inning before he made way for Camron Lewis. Lewis did not give up a hit to Wesleyan in his two innings of work. He recorded three strikeouts. Bryant (3-0) was credited with the win. The five hits that he gave up were all singles and only one of the runs scored against him was earned.

Game 2: West Virginia State 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 1, Final/7

The second game of the afternoon was scoreless through four innings. State broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth. Huber hit his third home run in two days, bringing his season total to 10 goners. Ryan Kay was standing on second after a base knock and a wild pitch, 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets piled on the runs in the sixth inning. William Glick doubled to drive in the first of six runs in the inning. Waters and Kay both singled to drive in one run each. Nathan Paulsen then sent a three-run shot over the fence, 8-0.

Morris launched a solo shot to lead off the seventh inning, 9-0.

Chase Norris (4-1) remained on the mound in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game he started. With two outs, he gave up his first run, albeit an unearned run, off a single by the Bobcats. He struck out the next batter to close the curtains.

Next Up

The Yellow Jackets will begin a four-game homestand against Glenville State on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. next.
