Baseball turns split into a sweep with an incredible comeback versus Glenville

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (21-11, 13-3 MEC) swept a doubleheader against Glenville State (16-17, 9-7 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets ran away with the first game, 15-2, before they came back in incredible fashion to win the second game, 8-6.

Game 1: West Virginia State 15, Glenville State 2, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets racked up runs early and often in the first game of the afternoon. Tyler Overaitis drew a walk with the bases loaded in the first inning to score the first run of the contest. Chris Morris hit a sacrifice fly to score Mike Huber from third for a second run in the same inning, 2-0.

West Virginia State unloaded in the second inning with six runs. A wild pitch with the bases juiced scored the first run. Nathan Paulsen then drove in two runs with a double to the gap in right center, 5-0. Paulsen came around to score soon after when the pitcher skyed a pickoff attempt at first base, 6-0. Morris homered to left field with a man on base for the last two runs of the inning, 8-0.

Huber hit a two-run homer to left field in the third inning to increase the lead to 10 runs, 10-0.

Two more runs were tacked on by WVSU in the fifth inning when Glenville's right fielder dropped a fly ball, 12-0.

The Pioneers ended the shutout in the top of the sixth with a solo home run and an RBI-single, 12-2.

The Yellow Jackets added three runs to their tally in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Waters batted in the first run with a single to left center, 13-2. A throwing error by Glenville's third baseman allowed the second run to score, 14-2. Waters scored from third on a ground out by Huber for the third run, 15-2.

No runs were given up by Nick Loftis in the top of the seventh. He tossed the last two innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Chris Morris (6-1) was on the mound for the first five innings. He only allowed one hit while holding the Pioneers scoreless. He recorded five strikeouts in his sixth win of the season.

Game 2: West Virginia State 8, Glenville State 6, Final/7

The Pioneers gained an early advantage with an RBI-double in the top of the first, 1-0.

They extended their lead with a grand slam in the third inning, 5-0.

West Virginia State removed its goose egg from the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Michael Bittinger singled down the left field line to score Connor Fizer from second base, 5-1.

Caleb Lafunor was solid on the mound for WVSU. He tossed the last four innings and only gave up one run on two hits. His one run came off a solo shot in the top of the seventh, 6-1.

Glenville's starting pitcher finally cracked in the bottom of the seventh. The bases were loaded with no outs for Michael Bittinger. Bittinger launched a goner over the fence in left field to cut the deficit to one run, 6-5.

The Pioneers were forced to make their first pitching change of the game after Bittinger's grand slam. The reliever walked two batters and struck out one before Nate Paulsen stepped up to the plate. In incredible fashion, he smacked a walk-off home run to left field, 8-6.
