Yellow Jackets drop two to Glenville on Sunday to split weekend series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (21-13, 13-5 MEC) was defeated by Glenville State (18-17, 11-7 MEC) in both games of the twinbill played on Sunday at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets were shutout in the first game, 14-0, before they fell in the second game, 12-6.

Game 1: Glenville State 14, West Virginia State 0, Final/7

Glenville's Austin Corn was nearly unhittable in his six innings pitched. He only gave up three hits, all singles, while recording 12 strikeouts. Nathan Paulsen went 2-for-2 off Corn while Mike Huber went 1-for-2 off the Pioneers' starting pitcher.

Glenville's Noah Petrovi tossed the last inning and preserved the shutout by not allowing a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh.

The Pioneers went up 2-0 in the top of the second before they put up five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. They tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning.

Game 2: Glenville State 12, West Virginia State 6, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets fell behind 9-0 through four and a half innings in the second game of the afternoon.

Huber sparked a comeback effort in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer, 9-3. Later in the half inning, Chris Morris drove in a run with a double before he was brought home with a sacrifice fly from William Glick, 9-5.

Glenville added two runs to its tally in the top of the sixth, 11-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Overaitis batted in Kyle Waters with a hard-hit single to right field, 11-6. The inning came to a sudden halt when Morris was called out due to interference, preventing two runs from being scored.

A sacrifice fly by the Pioneers in the top of the seventh resulted in a six-run deficit, 12-6, for WVSU to overcome in the bottom of the inning. Connor Fizer drew a walk to leadoff the bottom of the seventh. A pitching change was made afterwards and three quick outs ensued.
