State stumbles twice on Saturday at Concord; sets up shot at redemption on Sunday

ATHENS, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (21-15, 13-7 MEC) dropped two games to Concord (24-12, 14-6 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field. The Yellow Jackets fell by a 12-3 final score in the first game before they were edged, 6-5, in the second game. The Mountain Lions jumped WVSU in the MEC standings with the pair of wins. State will need to win both games tomorrow to move back into second place in the South Division.

Game 1: Concord 12, West Virginia State 3, Final/7

State's and Concord's aces faced off in the first game of the afternoon. Concord's Andrew Neff (6-3) fared better than State's Chris Morris (6-2). Neff lasted the full seven, giving up three runs on seven hits. Morris was yanked after 3.2 innings. He allowed nine runs, six earned, and seven hits.

The Mountain Lions scored two runs off a single in the second inning, 2-0. They tacked on four runs in the third, two of which were plated with a home run. A three-run fourth inning followed before two runs were added by Concord in the fifth, 11-0. An RBI-single in the sixth inning left the Yellow Jackets down 12-0 going into the top of the seventh.

Connor Fizer singled through the right side of the infield to drive in a run and end the shutout in the seventh, 12-1. He scored later in the inning when Kyle Waters reached base on a fielder's choice, 12-2. Ryan Kay singled through the left side of the infield to bat in one more run, 12-3, before the final out was recorded.

Game 2: Concord 6, West Virginia State 5, Final/7

Concord was first to score in the second inning. The Mountain Lions plated two unearned runs on two separate errors, 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets made Concord pay for an error in the third inning. William Glick reached base on a fielding error before he was brought home by Ethan Spolarich's single through the left side of the infield, 2-1.

Chris Morris tied the score with a double to right field in the top of the fourth. Nathan Paulsen, who reached base on another fielding error, crossed home plate on the double, 2-2.

The fifth inning was scoreless. In the top of the sixth, State seized its first lead of the afternoon. Morris was the RBI-man once again. Mike Huber singled to lead off the inning before Tyler Overaitis doubled to move him over to third base. Morris drove in Huber with a single to center field, 3-2.

The lead was short-lived. The first out was recorded in the first at bat of the bottom of the sixth. Six-consecutive singles by the Mountain Lions followed, resulting in four runs being scored, 6-3.

Huber nearly saved the day in the top of the seventh. He belted a two-run homer to left center with two outs, 6-5. A ground out in the next at bat closed the curtains on the doubleheader.
