WVSU redeems Saturday stumble with a pair of wins on Sunday

ATHENS, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (23-15, 15-7 MEC) split the weekend series at Concord (24-14, 14-8 MEC) after winning both games of the doubleheader on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets snapped Concord's 14-game win streak with a 6-5 win after nine innings in the first game. They came back to win the second game by a final score of 9-4 and overtook the Mountain Lions in the MEC standings by doing so. WVSU is now tied for second place with Glenville State. The Pioneers swept Davis & Elkins this weekend.

Game 1: West Virginia State 6, Concord 5, Final/9

State was first to score in the top of the second. Chris Morris scored on a wild pitch before William Glick was brought home by Michael Bittinger's single to right field, 2-0.

Concord cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Ayden Hodges hit a Mountain Lion with the bases loaded, 2-1, before getting out of the jam with a strikeout.

In the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs. Kyle Waters grounded out to allow Glick to score from third base, 3-1. Ryan Kay singled to left field in the next at bat to drive in Connor Fizer from third, 4-1.

Concord got one run back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single, 4-2. Hodges left two Mountain Lions stranded with a fly out and a strikeout following the run-scoring single.

Chris Morris launched a solo jack to left field in the top of the fifth to increase the Yellow Jackets' lead to three runs, 5-2. Concord responded with another RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth to pull back within two runs, 5-3.

Nick Loftis replaced Hodges at the start of the bottom of the sixth. Loftis gave up a two-run homer to even the score. Tyrus Baumgardner replaced Loftis to get the final out of the inning and leave one runner on base.

Baumgardner kept the bases clear in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. He allowed one base runner, with an intentional walk, in the bottom of the eighth to give his team another chance in the ninth.

Waters led off in the top of the ninth and delivered with one swing of the bat. He belted a goner down the left field line to break the deadlock, 6-5.

Baumgardner remained on the mound in the bottom of the ninth. He recorded two quick outs before giving up back-to-back singles. He then forced a grounder to Glick at third. Glick made the fielder's choice at second base to end the game. Baumgardner (2-1) was credited with the win.

Game 2: West Virginia State 9, Concord 4, Final/7

State put up a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Tyler Overaitis singled up the middle to score Mike Huber from second base, 1-0.

The Mountain Lions changed the lead in the bottom of the first. They picked up two runs with a ground out and a single down the left field line, 2-1.
Concord extended its lead with another two-run inning in the third. An RBI-single and a sacrifice fly left WVSU trailing by three runs, 4-1.

In the fifth, Chris Morris closed the gap by driving in two runs with a single to left field, 4-3.

The Yellow Jackets were then able to regain the lead with five runs in the top of the sixth. Ryan Kay's RBI-single with one out evened the score, 4-4. Back-to-back doubles from Mike Huber and Nathan Paulsen resulted in a two-run advantage for State, 6-4. With two outs, Morris hit a ground-rule double to score Paulsen, 7-4. William Glick then singled up the middle to bring Morris home, 8-4.

State added another insurance run in the top of the seventh. Huber singled through the left side of the infield to allow Michael Bittinger to cross home plate, 9-4.

Caleb Lafunor took the mound in the bottom of the seventh after entering the game in the sixth inning. He gave up a double and a single before forcing a double play. Lafunor then got the last batter to fly out. JT Fabian (1-0) was credited with the win for his 2.2 innings pitched before Lafunor. He did not allow a hit or a run.
