Baseball wins twice against D&E on Saturday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (25-15, 17-7 MEC) won both games of a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins (0-44, 0-24 MEC) on Saturday at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game comfortably, 15-0, before they pulled away late to win the second game by a final score of 7-0.

WVSU remains tied for second place with Glenville State in the MEC South Division standings. The Pioneers won both of their games against Wesleyan today. Meanwhile, Concord dropped its first two games against UC to fall three games behind Glenville and WVSU.

Game 1: West Virginia State 15, Davis & Elkins 0, Final/7

Ace Chris Morris took the mound for State in the first game of the afternoon. He tossed five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. He struck out 10 Senators before being relieved by Camron Lewis in the sixth inning. Lewis maintained the shutout for two innings. He also only gave up one hit. Morris (7-2) was credited with the win.

The Yellow Jackets went up by three runs in the bottom of the first. A walk with the bases loaded scored the first run before Connor Fizer singled through the right side of the infield to drive in two runs, 3-0.

Two more runs were scored on Ryan Kay's single, coupled with an error, in the second inning. Nathan Paulsen's sacrifice fly then gave State a 6-0 lead.

A two-run homer by Chris Morris in the fourth increased the lead to eight runs.

A sacrifice fly by Ryan Kay in the fifth was followed by back-to-back solo jacks from Mike Huber and Nathan Paulsen, 11-0.

Brady Hall-Montgomery doubled to right field in the sixth inning to drive in the first run of his collegiate career, 12-0. Kyle Waters tripled to the gap in the right center to clear the two runners left on base in the next at bat, 14-0. Waters then scored on Hunter McSweeney's ground out to give the game its final score, 15-0.

Game 2: West Virginia State 7, Davis & Elkins 0, Final/7

Ayden Hodges racked up 10 strikeouts in his six innings pitched after getting the start for the Yellow Jackets in game two. He only gave up three hits to the Senators on his way to his third win of the season.

A pitcher's duel ensued for the opening three innings of the contest. In the top of the fourth, D&E nearly took the lead. Hodges got himself into a bases loaded jam with one out. He got the next batter to fly out and a run would have scored if the runner on second did not leave base early while tagging up. The mishap resulted in an unconventional double play to allow Hodges to exit the half inning unscathed.

The one would-be run was made inconsequential by Connor Fizer in the bottom of the fourth. Fizer sent a screamer down the left field line that crept over the fence for a two-run home run, 2-0.

Chris Morris was next to homer in the bottom of the fifth. He did so with two men on base to give State a five-run advantage. Kyle Waters added an RBI-single to the inning to make the score 6-0.

Nate Paulsen launched a solo shot to dead center in the sixth inning, 7-0. Both him and Morris hit two home runs on the day.

Tyrus Baumgardner took the mound in the top of the seventh. After a quick first out, he allowed two base runners by giving up a double and an infield single. The base hits were nullified when he forced a double-play ball to preserve the shutout and bring the game to a close.
