Yellow Jackets sweep series with D&E; clinch postseason berth

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (27-15, 19-7 MEC) defeated Davis & Elkins (0-46, 0-26 MEC) twice on Sunday at Cal Bailey Field to sweep the weekend series. The Yellow Jackets won the first game of the doubleheader, 11-3, before they piled on the runs to win the second game, 22-9.

WVSU clinched a postseason berth in the MEC Tournament with the sweep of the Senators. Meanwhile, Concord was eliminated from postseason contention after being swept by Charleston in a four-game series. Glenville State swept Wesleyan over the weekend to remain tied for second place with the Yellow Jackets in the South Division. West Virginia State's series against Charleston and Glenville's series against Concord next week will ultimately determine seeding in the South at the 2024 MEC Baseball Tournament at GoMart Ballpark.

Game 1: West Virginia State 11, Davis & Elkins 3, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets got off to a great start in game one with a five-run first inning. Highlights of the first inning included Connor Fizer's triple to right center, which scored two runs, and William Glick's ground-rule double that brought Fizer home.

State went up 11-0 after five innings. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the second inning, benefitted from a solo shot by Fizer in the fourth, and tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Huber doubled in the second and fifth innings, driving in three runs for WVSU.

Davis & Elkins ended the shutout in the top of the sixth with a three-run inning, 11-3. After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, pitcher Noah Jordan entered the game. He recorded two strikeouts and left two Senators stranded to close out the game.

Colin Bryant (4-2) was credited the win for tossing the first five innings. He kept D&E off the scoreboard and only gave up two hits.

Game 2: West Virginia State 22, Davis & Elkins 9, Final/7

The Senators went up 3-0 in the top of the first to gain their first lead of the weekend series. State quickly righted the ship with seven runs scored in the bottom of the first. The Yellow Jackets never relinquished the lead after regaining it. Davis & Elkins came within two runs of tying the score, 9-7, after a four-run third inning, but did not come any closer.

State racked up 22 runs on 22 hits to run away with the final game of the series. Seven Yellow Jackets registered multiple hits in the game. Connor Fizer, Mike Huber, Michael Bittinger and Kyle Waters all had outstanding performances at the plate.
