State splits the first of two doubleheaders at Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (17-11, 9-3 MEC) split a doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan (10-16, 5-7 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Hank Ellis Field. The Yellow Jackets were outdone in the first game, 15-9, before they won in dominating fashion in the second game, 14-0.

Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 15, West Virginia State 9

The Bobcats were able to score at will in the first game of the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets played from behind for seven innings and were unable to overcome the deficit despite a valiant effort in the fifth inning.

Wesleyan put up four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. A sacrifice fly and a single up the middle drove in one run each. A double to right field then scored two more runs, 4-0.

Two more runs were tacked on by the Bobcats in the second inning, 6-0, before State terminated the shutout in the top of the third. Mike Huber hit a solo shot to left field before Connor Fizer drew a walk with the bases loaded, 6-2.

Wesleyan added another two runs on an error in the bottom of the third, 8-2.

Cody Rinehart homered to leadoff the top of the fourth, 8-3.

The Bobcats scored two runs on a triple in the bottom of the fourth before a sacrifice fly scored a third run, 11-3.

The Yellow Jackets made their best attempt to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth. William Glick batted in two runs with a double to left field, 11-5. Fizer was then able to touch home plate on a passed ball, 11-6. Kyle Waters was last to make a dent in the deficit in the half inning. He launched a goner to left field with Glick still on base, 11-8.

Wesleyan added a run in the bottom of the fifth before tacking on three runs in the sixth inning, 15-8.

Chris Morris led off in the top of the seventh and sent a screamer over the fence in left field, 15-9. Three quick outs followed to bring the game to its conclusion.

Game 2: West Virginia State 14, West Virginia Wesleyan 0

The second game of the afternoon was completely one-sided. The Yellow Jackets piled on the runs while holding the Bobcats scoreless for seven innings.

Waters led off the game with a solo homer, 1-0. Tyler Overaitis doubled later in the top of the first to score Ryan Kay from second base, 2-0. Morris homered in the next at bat with two men on base, 5-0. Both of the home runs were the second of the day for Waters and Morris.

Nathan Paulsen smacked a no-doubter with nobody on in the third inning, 6-0.
Waters drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning, 8-0. Later in the same inning, Huber hit his second grand slam of the season, 12-0. The home run was his second of the afternoon.

State tacked on two runs in the fifth inning. A wild pitch with the bases loaded scored the first run before Huber was hit by a pitch with the bases still juiced to score the second run, 14-0.

Chris Morris (5-1) and JT Fabian combined for the shutout. Morris got the start and threw the first five innings to earn his fifth win of the season. He struck out nine Bobcats and only gave up three hits. Fabian tossed the last two innings and only allowed one hit. None of Wesleyan's hits went for extra bases.
