WVSU softball falls at Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team fell at Fairmont State on Friday afternoon in both ends of the penultimate regular season doubleheader of the season, falling in the first game 8-3, then in a shortened game two, 9-1.

Game 1 - WVSU 3, Fairmont St. 8
The Yellow Jackets fell behind early after the Falcons put a four spot in the first inning and added a run in the second inning. State got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Avery Contreras singled to right center, scoring Autumn Thompson. Contreras was then caught stealing second base allowing Addi Dillow to score, 5-2.

The Falcons scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth, then scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, 8-2. A Kaliegh Murphy ground out in the seventh scored Autumn Hall to complete the scoring. 

Thompson hit 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. 

Game 2 - WVSU 1, Fairmont St. 9 (5 innings)
State took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Cassidy Cummings sent a comebacker through the infield, scoring Murphy. 

The lead held until the bottom of the fourth inning when Fairmont State hit a pair of two-RBI hits, a single and a triple, 4-1.

The Falcons scored five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Cassidy Cummings went 2-2 with an RBI.

The Yellow Jackets will head to Frostburg State Saturday afternoon for their final regular season game of the season. Davis & Elkins dropped both of their games today, so the Yellow Jackets are still alive to make the Mountain East tournament.
