West Virginia State Softball drops season finale to Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – West Virginia State's softball team traveled to Frostburg State for the final doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. They dropped a close 3-2 decision before nearly having a perfect game pitched against them in a 10-0 loss in five innings.

Post Game Records
WVSU: 20-31, 11-19 MEC
Frostburg State: 29-18, 20-8 MEC

Game 1 - WVSU 2, Frostburg State 3
Addi Dillow hit an RBI groundout in the top of the first to give State a 1-0 lead. A solo shot for the Bobcats in the bottom of the third tied the game, 1-1. The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the next inning on an RBI fielder's choice and gained an insurance run on a double in the bottom of the fifth.

State got a run back in the top of the sixth with a Clarke Moore pinch-hit RBI single to score Autumn Hall. Cassidy Cummings hit a lead off double in the top of the seventh and got to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded after a ground out and a fly out.

Game 2 - WVSU 0, Frostburg State 10 (5 innings)
After sitting down the Yellow Jackets in order, Frostburg State put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning on three singles and a wild pitch.

Cummings was hit by a pitch in the top of the second inning, but got no further on the base paths. She was State's only base runner of the game.

The Bobcats scored four more runs in the bottom of the second. The rest of the game went quietly. A walk for the Bobcats in the bottom of the third was the only base runner for either team and the game ended after State went down in order in the top of the fifth.

With the two losses on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets are out of the running to make the Mountain East Tournament that begins on Wednesday. State will say goodbye to a trio of seniors that have certainly made their mark in Emele Clark, Dillow, and Autumn Thompson. Clark set the record earlier this season for the most stolen bases in a single season. Her final tally is 37 steals. All three were on the team in 2021 that advanced to the MEC Championship series.
