WVSU softball falls in a pair of extra-inning thrillers

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team took the Davis & Elkins Senators into extra innings in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday, but came up one run short both times, falling in an eight inning game one 5-4, then dropping a 3-2 decision in nine innings in game two.

D&E: 25-20, 12-12 MEC

Game 1 - WVSU 4, D&E 5 (8 inn.)
WVSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with lead-off hitter Emele Clark skirting a single down the left field line. Clark then stole two straight bases. Autumn Thompson worked a one-out walk then Emma Pauley knocked a single through the infield to score Clark, 1-0. Clark came back up in the bottom of the second and got an RBI base hit, scoring Kristabelle Carte, 2-0.

The Senators got a run back in the top of the third. Thompson walked in the bottom of the inning for the second straight time, and came home when Pauley got her second RBI hit of the game, this time a double, 3-0.

D&E scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, 3-3. In the eighth inning, D&E plated two more, 5-3. WVSU got a run back in the bottom eighth when pinch hitter Chelsea Thompson blasted a comebacker straight up the middle to score Addi Dillow, but the rally attempt was halted when the next batter struck out.

Game 2 - WVSU 2, D&E 3 (9 inn.)
Neither team scored in the first five innings. The Senators broke open the scoreboard with an RBI single then added another on WVSU's lone error of the game.

It was looking bleak for the home team, but a two-out rally started with Clark reaching base on an error, then an Autumn Thompson walk brought up Pauley. Pauley hit a fly ball single that scored Clark. Dillow then fired a ground ball through the left side of the infield to score pinch runner Sydney Shamblin, 2-2.

Neither team scored in the eighth, but D&E plated the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth. State went down in four batters in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
