WVSU Softball falls at home under the lights

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State played their first and only night game at Lady Jackets Field this season on Wednesday night and dropped both ends of the doubleheader to the No. 13 University of Charleston Golden Eagles, 6-4 and 7-1.

WVSU: 19-24, 10-12 MEC
UC: 35-2, 21-1 MEC

Game 1 - WVSU 4, UC 6
UC struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles. State got one of those runs back when Autumn Thompson dropped a blooper just beyond the reach of the second baseman, scoring Emele Clark.

UC put a three-spot on the Yellow Jackets in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly, a throwing error and a double, 5-1. They added their final run in the top of the fourth, 6-1.

Addi Dillow and Kristabelle Carte slugged back-to-back doubles scoring Thompson and Dillow to claw back to a 6-3 deficit in the bottom of the fourth. A bunt single in the bottom of the fifth allowed one run to score but Clark was thrown out at home trying to score a second, 6-4.

State went down in order in the sixth and seventh to dash any rally hopes.

Game 2 - WVSU 1, UC 7
The Golden Eagles plated five runs in the first three innings, only one of which was earned. State broke up the shutout in the fifth inning after Clark hit a lead-off, first-pitch triple into right center and then Clarke Moore hit a sac fly to bring her in.

UC added two more in the top of the sixth for the final score.
