WVSU Softball splits on Day 1 of Fast Pitch Dreams Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – West Virginia State's softball team split their first pair of games on the first day of the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic held at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. In their opening game of the tournament, Autumn Thompson threw a one-hit shutout of United States Collegiate Athletic Association member Penn State Mont Alto, then the Yellow Jackets fell to the Baker University Wildcats in the second game.

Post-Game Records
WVSU: 6-6
PSMA: 4-1
Baker: 11-5

Game 1 - WVSU 3, Penn State Mont Alto 0
Penn State Mont Alto got their only hit of the game with one out in the top of the second inning, sacrificed her to second, but stranded her there after a flyout to left field.

WVSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with Emele Clark getting a two out bunt single, then scored from first after Addi Dillow ripped a double down the left field line, 1-0. PSMA went down in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

State scored a pair of insurance runs when Cassidy Cummings hit a bases-loaded, one-out single into right field, scoring Autumn Hall and Emma Pauley. Pauley and Hall hit singles earlier in the inning. PSMA got their leadoff batter aboard in the top of the seventh after a throwing error, but was forced out on a fielder's choice in the next at bat, and the next two batters were sat down via groundout and strikeout.

Thompson got the complete game shutout victory, her third win of the season, fanning five. Pauley went 2-for-3. Clarke Moore, Clark, Cummings and Hall each got a base hit while Dillow grabbed a two-bagger.

Game 2 - WVSU 1, Baker 2
Baker hit a two-out RBI triple in the top of the second inning then plated an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.

Thompson worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh in an at-bat that took eight pitches to complete after being behind 0-2. Pauley came to bat and ripped a shot into center field that looked like it would clear the fence but was just shy, scoring Thompson. The throw came in and it looked like the fielders would throw home, but instead threw back to second to catch Pauley off the bag. Avery Contreras worked another difficult walk with two away, but the come back fell short when the next batter struck out.

Kerigan Moore went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles. Clarke Moore also hit a single and Pauley hit a double. Hall struck out two.

State will play two more games on Friday, a rematch against Baker at 9 a.m. and a 1 p.m. game against Rochester Christian.
