WVSU drops rematch to Baker; takes down Rochester in Fast Pitch Dreams Classic Day 2

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – WVSU went up early on Baker in their day two rematch, but fell in extra innings, 5-1. The Yellow Jackets recovered and used a five-run fifth inning to take down Rochester Christian in their fourth game of the tournament, 8-2.

Post Game Records
WVSU: 7-7
Baker: 12-5
Rochester: 2-6

Game 1: WVSU 1, Baker 5 (8 innings)
WVSU took an early 1-0 lead after Emma Pauley hammered a shot to center field. Autumn Thompson scored after the throw to the cut-off from the Baker center fielder went awry.

Baker tied it up in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single with runners on first and second, 1-1.

Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation. Three straight singles and a fielding error in the top of the eighth gave Baker a four-run lead that was too mountainous for the Yellow Jackets to overcome.

Pauley went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Thompson was 1-for-2 with a run and a walk. She also struck out four in seven innings of work.

Game 2: WVSU 8, Rochester 2
WVSU struck early with Clark Moore digging out a single in the top of the first that went off the end of her bat. Emele Clark scored in the confusion after earning one of three walks and stealing second base.

Clark boarded base again in the bottom of the third inning on four straight pitches, her second free pass of the game. She stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on an Addi Dillow infield hit, 2-0.

Rochester broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth inning, 2-1.

WVSU responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the home half of the fifth. Clarke Moore led off with a first-pitch lead-off single, but was thrown out on a fielder's choice by Thompson. Pauley singled and Jayde Baron ripped an RBI double to right field, scoring Thompson. Kristabella Carte then came up and hit an RBI comebacker, scoring Pauley and chasing the Rochester pitcher, 4-1.

Kaitlyn Cabral knocked in Baron on the first pitch from the new pitcher with a sacrifice fly, 5-1. Carte scored when the third baseman skied a ground ball into right field while attempting to force out Kerigan Moore at first, 6-1. Addi Dillow rounded out the scoring in the inning when she hit an RBI single, scoring Moore.

Rochester got one back in the top of the sixth, but State responded when Pauley blasted a triple down the left field line to score Thompson, 8-2.

Rochester went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.

Dillow, Moore, and Pauley each went 2-for-4 in the game. Dillow had two RBIs while Moore and Pauley each had one. Pauley also hit a triple, her first three-bagger of the season. Clark was 0-for-1, but drew three walks and had three stolen bases.

Kaleigh Murphy got the win in the circle, her second this season. She allowed one earned run and fanned five without allowing any free passes.
