WVSU racks up 14 runs on 14 hits to best Bluefield State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (5-6) beat Bluefield State (6-8) by a final score of 14-5 in a single nine-inning game played on Tuesday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets totaled 14 hits including three home runs and four doubles.

West Virginia State teed off on Bluefield State's starting pitcher in the bottom of the first. Kyle Waters walked and Ryan Kay doubled down the left field line to start the half inning. Waters scored on a groundout by Tyler Overaitis, 1-0. Connor Fizer then singled up the middle to bring in Kay, 2-0. Nathan Paulsen moved Fizer to second base with a single through the left side of the infield before Mike Huber did the same to drive in Fizer, 3-0.

The Big Blue picked up its first run in the top of the first with an RBI-single, 3-1.

Bluefield State added three runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead, 4-3. A two-run homer tied the score before a bunt single brought the go-ahead run across.

Bluefield State's lead did not last long. With two outs and two men on in the bottom of the fourth, Kay crushed a goner to left center to put his team back on top, 6-4.

The Big Blue cut the lead to one run, 6-5, in the top of the fifth with another RBI-single. Noah Jordan did well to get out of the jam by forcing a groundout and leaving two men stranded on the corners.

The Yellow Jackets killed Bluefield State's hope for a comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks and a single from Chris Morris quickly loaded the bases. A costly throwing error by Bluefield State's second baseman then allowed two runs to score, 8-5. A sacrifice bunt by Evan Weaver allowed another run to score, 9-5, before Kyle Waters homered to left center to tack on two more runs, 11-5.

Three runs were tacked on by West Virginia State in the bottom of the sixth. Nate Paulsen homered to dead center with Fizer on base, 13-5, before Mike Huber doubled to left field to drive in Morris, 14-5. Morris reached base with a double to the gap in left center before advancing to third base on a wild pitch.

The Big Blue was held to one run in three innings pitched by Jordan. Caleb Lafunor replaced him in the eighth inning and kept Bluefield State off the scoreboard for the next two innings while recording three strikeouts. Brian Lingenfelter earned his first win of the season as the pitcher of record in the top of the fourth.

The Yellow Jackets will head to Slippery Rock on Friday, Match 8 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader next.
