State splits with Slippery Rock on Friday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – West Virginia State baseball (6-7) split a twinbill with Slippery Rock (6-2) on Friday at Jack Critchfield Park. The Yellow Jackets fell by a narrow margin, 4-2, in the first game of the afternoon before they triumphed in the second game by a final score of 5-2.

Game 1: Slippery Rock 4, West Virginia State 2, Final/7

State's Ayden Hodges got off to a rocky start in game one, giving up a three-run homer to The Rock's Cam Panyko Morris in the first inning, 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to one run, 3-2, in the third inning. Kyle Waters led off the inning with a walk before Ryan Kay doubled down the left field line to drive in the first run. After a groundout advanced Kay to third base, Connor Fizer batted him in with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Hodges recovered gracefully after his shaky start and held Slippery Rock scoreless for the next four innings. He recorded five strikeouts in his five innings on the mound.

Camron Lewis relieved Hodges in the sixth inning and allowed his first run to be scored against him this season. After getting two quick outs, Lewis gave up back-to-back doubles to hand The Rock an insurance run, 4-2.

The side was retired in order in the top of the seventh by Slippery Rock's Gage Gillot, who earned his second win of the season after tossing a complete game.

Game 2: West Virginia State 5, Slippery Rock 2, Final/7

State's Chris Morris was the star of the show in game two. He tossed a complete game to earn his first win as a Yellow Jacket, tallying five strikeouts, and gave himself run support by driving in one run and scoring two runs.

Morris put the Yellow Jackets on top in the top of the second with a solo shot to left field, 1-0. The Rock's Cam Panyko Morris responded with his second goner of the day in the bottom of the inning. One man was on base, giving Slippery Rock a 2-1 lead.

Following a scoreless third inning, State picked up two runs in the top of the fourth. A wild pitch with the bases loaded scored the tying run, 2-2. A sacrifice fly by Carter Ruffner then allowed Morris to score the go-ahead run, 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets scored one run each in the fifth and sixth innings. Mike Huber crushed a solo shot over the left field fence in the fifth, 4-2. Waters drove in a run in the sixth with a double to left field, 5-2.

Morris left two on base in the bottom of the sixth by getting three-straight outs with a foul out and two fly outs. He walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh before dialing in a double play ground ball and finishing the game with a ground out.

Huber went 3-for-3 in the game with his third home run of the season. Morris went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season.
