Baseball splits twinbill at West Liberty; Huber homers twice

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (7-8, 1-1 MEC) opened conference play with a road trip to West Liberty (4-10, 1-1 MEC) on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won the first game of the twinbill, 12-8, before they fell in the second game, 7-3.

Game 1: West Virginia State 12, West Liberty 8, Final/7

The first game of the day was an absolute slugfest with 29 total hits and a combined 20 runs. Pitchers on both teams struggled with the exception of State's Tyrus Baumgardner who earned his second save of the season. Baumgardner did not allow a hit or run to be scored in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Yellow Jackets scored first on a ground out in the top of the first, 1-0, before the Hilltoppers went up 2-1 in the second inning.

WVSU then produced eight runs in the top of the third. Mike Huber homered with two men on base to give State a 4-2 lead. After the second out of the inning was recorded, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases. Michael Bittinger then singled to drive in a fourth run before Cody Rinehart and Kyle Waters drove in two runs each with a single and a double respectively, 9-2.

West Liberty scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to five runs, 9-4.

The fourth inning was scoreless. In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets tacked on another run. Waters doubled to left field to bring Rinehart home, 10-4.

The Hilltoppers nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the sixth by putting four runs on the scoreboard, 10-8. Baumgardner entered the game after the fourth run was scored and recorded the last out of the inning.

Two more runs were added by State in the top of the seventh. An error by West Lib's shortstop allowed the first run to come across before Ryan Kay drove in the second run with an RBI-double, 12-8.

Baumgardner struck out two Hilltoppers in the bottom of the seventh and forced a pop up for the final out.

Game 2: West Virginia State 3, West Liberty 7, Final/7

Huber hit his second home run of the day in the top of the first, 1-0. The Hilltoppers responded with their own solo shot in the bottom of the first to tie the score before an RBI-single gave them the lead, 2-1.

State reclaimed the lead in the top of the second. Bittinger singled with the bases loaded to tie the score before a sacrifice fly by Waters put WVSU on top, 3-2.

West Liberty evened the score once more in the bottom of the second. A double coupled with a costly error allowed the batter to touch all four bases, 3-3.

The Hilltoppers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with another solo shot, 4-3. They tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning.

Big Hitters

Huber went 3-for-7 on the day with two home runs, one double, four runs batted in and two runs scored. He has launched five goners so far this season and is on an eight-game hit streak. Meanwhile, Waters went 5-for-8 with two doubles, a sac fly, five runs batted in and two runs scored.
