State sweeps Wheeling on Sunday with a pair of 10-run performances

WASHINGTON, Pa. – West Virginia State baseball (9-8, 3-1 MEC) swept Wheeling (9-7, 0-4 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Wild Things Park. The Yellow Jackets racked up a total of 20 runs while holding Wheeling to four runs in the twinbill.

Game 1: West Virginia State 10, Wheeling 4, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets and the Cardinals scored two runs each in the first inning. State's leadoff batter, Kyle Waters, tripled to start the game in style. Ryan Kay brought him home in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly, 1-0. Connor Fizer drove in the second run later in the half inning with a single to center field, 2-0.

Wheeling evened the score, 2-2, with two RBI-singles in the bottom of the first. The bases were left loaded to prevent any further damage.

The Cardinals took the lead with another two-run inning in the second, 4-2. One RBI-single and a sacrifice fly were the culprits this time.

After a scoreless third inning, State gained a sizable advantage with a seven-run fourth inning. Michael Bittinger batted in the first run with a single to left field, 4-3. Cody Rinehart then tied the score with a sacrifice fly before Waters drove in the go-ahead run with a single to center field, 5-4. Two at bats later, the bases were juiced for Nathan Paulsen. He crushed a no-doubter over the fence in left field for a grand slam, 9-4.

WVSU tacked on one more run in the fifth inning with another RBI-single from Waters, 10-4.

Camron Lewis relieved starter Chase Norris in the sixth inning. Lewis did not give up a hit or a run while recording three strikeouts in his two innings pitched. Norris (2-1) earned the win for limiting Wheeling to four runs in his five innings on the mound. He tallied five strikeouts.

Game 2: West Virginia State 10, Wheeling 0, Final/7

Chris Morris tossed a complete game for the second time in his last two starts. He kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the shutout, allowing just three hits, and struck out a season-high 11 batters.

With Morris dealing, the Yellow Jackets only needed one run to win but ended up with 10. The go-ahead run was scored in the top of the second when Waters tripled to drive it in, 1-0.

Rinehart drove in the second run with a single to center field in the fourth inning, 2-0. Two more runs were scored by WVSU in the fifth off an RBI-single by Connor Fizer and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Overaitis, 4-0.

The Cardinals allowed six unearned runs to come across in the top of the seventh. The costly error by their third baseman allowed two runs to score before the other four runs were the result of a walk or a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Morris struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the series in style.
