Yellow Jackets edge Fairmont State twice to sweep series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (11-8, 5-1 MEC) swept Fairmont State (2-15, 1-5 MEC) in a pair of games, each decided by one run, played at Cal Bailey Field on Friday. The Yellow Jackets were clutch on multiple occasions in the first game to come out on top by a final score of 7-6 after 10 innings. The second game was a pitcher's duel in which WVSU picked up runs when necessary to win by a 2-1 scoreline.

Game 1: West Virginia State 7, Fairmont State 6, Final/10

The Falcons put runs on the scoreboard first in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, a single through the left side of the infield scored two runs, 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, State got one run back after Connor Fizer singled to leadoff the half inning and Tyler Overaitis doubled to the gap in the left center to move Fizer to third. Michael Bittinger brought Fizer home with a groundout, 2-1.

WVSU tied the score in the fifth inning. Cody Rinehart was able to score when Mike Huber hit a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field, 2-2.

In the sixth inning, Fairmont went up by two runs. A throwing error on a stolen base attempt at third allowed the first run to come across before an RBI-single drove in the second run, 4-2.

The game nearly came to an end in the bottom of the seventh. Bittinger walked before two quick outs were recorded by the Falcons. Ryan Kay then stepped up to the plate and sent a ball soaring over the fence in left center to send the game to extra innings, 4-4.

The eighth inning was scoreless. In the top of the ninth, Fairmont scored on a wild pitch that resulted in a close call at home plate, 5-4. The game was nearly concluded a second time in the bottom of the ninth. Two quick outs were recorded before Kyle Waters stepped up to the plate. He homered to right center to ensure a 10th inning would be played, 5-5. The Yellow Jackets left the bases loaded at the end of the ninth.

The Falcons went ahead by a run with an RBI-single in the top of the 10th. Then, with one out in the bottom of the 10th, Chris Morris launched a moon shot over the left field fence to level the score once more, 6-6. A second out was recorded before Rinehart reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before Waters singled up the middle to walk off, 7-6.

Tyrus Baumgardner (1-0) earned his first win of the season as the pitcher of record in the seventh inning. He limited Fairmont to one run and two hits while striking out two batters in his one inning pitched.

Game 2: West Virginia State 2, Fairmont State 1, Final/7

The second game of the afternoon was a pitcher's duel between State's Chase Norris and Fairmont's Connor Tingler. Both hurlers only gave up four hits and one earned run in their time on the mound. Norris went the full seven innings and matched his career-high of eight strikeouts in a game.

The Falcons were once again the team to go ahead first when they did so in the top of the fourth. The only mistake that Norris made was giving up a solo shot to Fairmont's Quintin Smith in the half inning, 1-0.

Mike Huber helped Norris out by hitting the first of his two big doubles in the bottom of the fourth. He led off the half inning with a double to left field. He then advanced to third base on a fly out before he scored on a ground out to even the score, 1-1.

Huber's next big double came in the sixth inning. After Kay reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop, Huber doubled to the gap in the right center to allow Kay to score all the way from first base, 2-1.

Norris (3-1) gave up a single to the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh before he struck out the next three batters to finish the game.
