WVSU drops first game, wins second against Frostburg

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (12-9, 6-2 MEC) split a doubleheader against Frostburg State (13-7, 6-2 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets were defeated by Frostburg, 6-2, in the first game before they won the second game, 5-2.

Game 1: Frostburg State 6, West Virginia State 2, Final/7

Frostburg's Max Proctor (3-1) got the start in the first game and tossed a one-hitter through four innings. Meanwhile, the Bobcats picked up one run each in the first and second innings with a pair of RBI-singles, 2-0. They added two unearned runs in the third inning when a throwing error allowed runners to score from second and third, 4-0.

Kyle Waters squashed Proctor's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth when he singled to left field. In the top of the fifth, Frostburg tacked on two more runs with an RBI-double and a sacrifice fly, 2-0.

Proctor finally slipped in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Overaitis and Chris Morris put WVSU on the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles, 6-1. Morris drove in Overaitis.

The Bobcats used a different reliever in each of the remaining two innings. The Yellow Jackets were able to score one run off the first reliever. After loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth, a passed ball allowed Ryan Kay to score, 6-2. Frostburg's second reliever struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Lefty Ayden Hodges tossed a complete game and racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts. He allowed five hits and four earned runs.

Game 2: West Virginia State 5, Frostburg State 2, Final/7

Chris Morris (3-1) tossed a no-hitter through 5.1 innings in the second game of the afternoon. The first hit that he gave up was a chopper that bounced over third baseman Connor Fizer's head. Through six innings, he held the Bobcats to the one single while keeping Frostburg off the scoreboard.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the first, Tyler Overaitis batted in Kyle Waters with a ground out. Morris then stepped up to the plate and homered to left field to give himself all the run support he needed on the mound, 4-0.

Overaitis drove in another run in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field, 5-0.

With over 100 pitches thrown going into the seventh inning, Morris finally let up. A double and a single to start the inning ended both the one-hitter and the shutout respectively, 5-1. One more unearned run was scored against him before a fly out to right field concluded the contest, 5-2. Morris recorded nine strikeouts in his third-straight complete game.
