Baseball wins in extra innings at Malone

CANTON, Ohio – West Virginia State baseball (13-9, 6-2 MEC) traveled to Malone (4-19, 1-8 GMAC) on Wednesday for a nine-inning game and came away with a 5-4 victory in extra innings.

State loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a base on balls in the top of the first. Two strikeouts followed before Aidan Paulsen got his turn at the plate. He singled to drive in two runs and give his team a 2-0 lead early.

Malone responded with an RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the first, 2-1. The Pioneers then tied the score in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, 2-2.

The third and fourth innings were scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth, Malone took the lead with a triple that scored two runs, 4-2.

The Yellow Jackets got those two runs back in the top of the sixth. William Glick batted in Chris Morris with a double for the first run. The second run was courtesy of a single by Jacob Painter that scored Glick, 4-4.

No runs were scored by either team in the seventh or eighth innings.

State came close to scoring the go-ahead run on two occasions in the top of the ninth. Carter Ruffner attempted to score from third base on a ground ball but was thrown out at home by the third baseman. Then, Kyle Waters tried to score from second base on Nathan Paulsen's single but was thrown out at the plate by the left fielder.

The Pioneers left one man stranded in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

The international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the 10th inning, placing a runner on second base at the beginning of each half inning. Nathan Paulsen was the runner placed on second base in the top of the 10th. He advanced to third base on Chris Morris's fly out before Glick hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring him home, 5-4.

Caleb Lafunor, who entered the game in the sixth inning, remained on the mound in the bottom of the 10th. He did not give up a base hit in the last half inning to earn his first win of the season. Lafunor did not allow a run to be scored in his five innings pitched while recording five strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets will head to Notre Dame College on Friday, March 29 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader next.
