Yellow Jackets, Tigers combine for 48 hits in split twinbill

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (16-10, 8-2 MEC) split a doubleheader at Salem (18-11) on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets outslugged the Tigers in the first game of the twinbill to easily win by a 10-run margin, 16-6. The second game went back and forth until Salem emerged victorious, 7-6, with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth.

Game 1: West Virginia St. 16, Salem 6, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets led by a slim one-run margin, 3-2, after three innings. The dynamics of the game changed when State piled on seven runs in the top of the fourth. The first three runs of the half inning were scored by a pair of RBI-singles and a walk with the bases loaded. Mike Huber was responsible for the last four runs with a grand slam, 10-2. He also homered in his last at bat in the third inning with one man on base.

Michael Bittinger homered with one man on in the fifth inning before Ryan Kay drove in his second run of the game, 13-2. The Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, 13-4.

Kyle Waters doubled in the top of the sixth to drive in his second and third runs of the contest, 15-4. Kay was next to bat and doubled to register his third RBI of the game, 16-4.

Salem picked up one run each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to give the game its final score.

Colin Bryant (2-0) was credited with the win for his five innings pitched in which he gave up nine hits and four runs.

Game 2: Salem 7, West Virginia St. 6, Final/8

The Yellow Jackets were primed to run away with the second game too after a four-run second inning. William Glick's RBI-single put the first run of the contest on the scoreboard, 1-0. The bases were loaded for Kay shortly thereafter. He doubled to clear the bases, 4-0.

Salem pulled back to within one run, 4-3, in the third inning. Two-consecutive ground outs allowed the runner on third to score before a single drove in the last run.

The Tigers scored another three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Back-to-back hit by pitches with the bases loaded allowed two runs to come across. The third run of the inning was scored on a ground out.

WVSU cut the lead to one run, 6-5, in the sixth inning when Glick scored on a wild pitch. He reached base with a single and was moved over to third base by singles from Bittinger and Kay.

Chris Morris tied the score in the top of the seventh with a solo shot. Tyrus Baumgardner retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to give his team a chance to win. Unfortunately, he was credited with his first loss of the season after he gave up the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.
