WVSU softball pitches two shutout victories over Wheeling

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team took two from the Wheeling Cardinals scoring 14 runs over the twinbill, while allowing zero. Autumn Thompson picked up her seventh win of the season, while Kaleigh Murphy made her fourth start and won her third game.

Game 1: WVSU 8, Wheeling 0 (6 innings)
Kerigan Moore reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third inning and attempted to steal second base. She was called out but awarded second base on obstruction. She scored on the next pitch when Autumn Thompson hit her first of two hits, 1-0.

WVSU doubled their lead in the next inning when Addi Dillow hit a lead off double, advanced to third on a fly out and then scored on a passed ball, 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets bats exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Thompson hit a lead-off home run down the right field line that nearly curved foul but just stayed inside the foul pole, 3-0. The next two batters singled, putting runners on first and second. Kristabella Carte loaded the bases when she hit a shot to center field, but the fly ball was dropped by the center fielder, loading the bases. Avery Contreras hit a sacrifice fly on the next at bat to score Sydney Shamblin, 4-0. A bases-clearing pinch-hit single by Cassidy Cummings scored Dillow and Carte, 6-0. Emele Clark ripped a shot into right field that stayed inside the fence, scoring Kaitlyn Cabral who ran for Cummings.Clark ended up scoring, hitting her first career home run and ending the game via run-rule, 8-0.

Game 2: WVSU 6, Wheeling 0
Emele Clark led off the bottom of the first inning with a four-pitch walk, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt single by Moore then scored on Emma Pauley's sacrifice fly, 1-0

Autumn Thompson hit a two-out double to right center field in the bottom of the third and then scored on the next batter when Emma Pauley ripped a shot into center field, 2-0.

Addi Dillow hit a grounder that was fumbled by the second baseman, allowing both Sydney Shamblin and Emma Pauley to score, 4-0. Dillow advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Kristabella Carte hit a double into right-center field, 5-0. Kaitlyn Cabral hit a two-out single to score Cabral and wrap up the scoring, 6-0. 

Wheeling went down in order in the top of the seventh to seal WVSU's second consecutive shutout.

Up Next
WVSU will host West Liberty on Monday March 25 for a makeup doubleheader. The twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday March 23 and will start at 1:00 p.m.
