WVSU softball splits with West Liberty at home

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State split with the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Monday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field. The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the fifth inning to take game one 5-1, then fell in game two after committing five errors in the contest, 8-1.

Game 1: WVSU 5, West Liberty 1
West Liberty scored their lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to left center. 

In the bottom of the fifth, WVSU sent 10 batters to the plate. Avery Contreras led off and sent a come-backer into center field for a lingle. Clarke Moore laid down a bunt that went in between the charging third baseman and the shortstop for a base hit, moving pinch runner Sydney Shamblin to second. Both runners advanced on Kaitlyn Cabral's sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third. Emele Clark laid down a beauty of a sac squeeze. The throw to the plate was late, scoring Shamblin, 1-1.

A wild pitch to Kerigan Moore allowed Clarke Moore to score and moved Clark all the way from first to third. Another bunt single, this time by Kerigan Moore scored Clark, 3-1.Emma Pauley hit into an RBI groundout and Addi Dillow sent a shot through the left side of the infield to account for the final two runs. 

Both teams went down in order in the sixth and West Liberty stranded two runners in the seventh on three ground outs.

Game 2: WVSU 1, West Liberty 8
West Liberty scored four runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the second, 5-0. WVSU's only run of the game came in the bottom of the second when Addi Dillow walked then took second and third on a pair of wild pitches. She came home on an RBI groundout by Kristabelle Carte, 5-1. 

West Liberty added a sixth run on a rundown play that failed to get an out, but allowed the runner at third to steal home. A sac fly and sac bunt in the top of the seventh added two more runs for the Hilltoppers. WVSU went down in order on a pair of flyouts and an interference call.

State will host Concord on Friday, March 29 at Lady Jackets Field. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
