Two big innings cause WVSU softball to drop a pair to #15 UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – WVSU's softball team fell behind early by large deficits in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against nationally-ranked No. 15 University of Charleston and ended up falling 8-2 in game one, and 5-3 in game two.

Game 1 - WVSU 2, UC 8
UC opened the scoring in the game in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits. WVSU got a run back in the top of the third with an Autumn Thompson RBI single, scoring Emele Clark

UC restored their five run lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

Avery Contreras hit an RBI ground out in the top of the sixth to score pinch runner Sydney Shamblin. Two more runs for UC in the bottom of the sixth set the final score.

Thompson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk at the plate. She struck out three in the circle. Clark was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. 

Game 2 - WVSU 3, UC 5
UC hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first, and added a fifth run in the bottom of the second when the runner boarded on an error.

In the top of the fourth, a single by Emma Pauley and a ground out by Addi Dillow allowed Kerigan Moore and Pauley to score, respectively. A Cassidy Cummings ground out in the top of the seventh scored Dillow, but two batters later, a ground out ended the game.

Dillow hit 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Kaitlyn Cabral was also 2-for-3. Kaleigh Murphy threw four-and-two-thirds innings in relief and didn't allow another run in the game.

State returns home for a pair of weekend doubleheaders starting with West Liberty on Saturday, March 23. First game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
