Yellow Jackets come up short twice versus IUP

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (4-6) fell twice to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2-3) by final scores of 3-1 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field.

Game 1: IUP 3, WVSU 1, Final/7

The first game of the afternoon was a bonafide pitcher's duel between the Crimson Hawks' Mark Edeburn and State's Ayden Hodges. Edeburn lasted the full seven innings and only gave up two hits. Meanwhile, Hodges tossed 6.1 innings and recorded seven strikeouts.

IUP scored first in the top of the second with a double to the gap in right center that drove in two runs, 2-0. Mike Huber cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the second with a solo shot over the fence in left field. Nathan Paulsen doubled to left center later in the half inning for State's only other hit of the game and was left stranded.

The Crimson Hawks tacked on one more run with an RBI-single in the top of the seventh to give the game its final score, 3-1.

Game 2: IUP 4, WVSU 2, Final/9

Two strong starting pitchers appeared on the mound again in the second game of the afternoon. State's Chris Morris lasted 6.1 innings and only gave up three hits. IUP's Derrick Shields made it through four innings and allowed just two hits.

Morris earned one run in the top of the first when he gave up an RBI-single with two outs, 1-0. He held the Crimson Hawks scoreless for the rest of his time on the mound.

The Yellow Jackets tied the score in the bottom of the fifth after a reliever was brought into the game. Kyle Waters homered to left center for his third hit of the game, 1-1.

Two runners were left on base by both teams in the seventh inning to force extra innings. IUP then scored on a single to center field in the top of the eighth, 2-1. Morris launched a sacrifice fly to deep center and scored Cody Rinehart from third base, 2-2, in the bottom of the eighth to extend the game another inning.

A pair of fielding errors allowed two runs to come across in the top of the ninth, 4-2. The Crimson Hawks' closer was then able to retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.

The Yellow Jackets will host Bluefield State on Tuesday, March 5 at 3 p.m. for a single nine-inning game.
