WVSU softball shuts out Concord in game one, falls in game two

ATHENS, W.Va. – West Virginia State's Autumn Thompson picked up win number six on the season with a 5-0 shutout of the Concord Mountain Lions, but the Mountain Lions regrouped and took a 5-0 lead in game two. The Yellow Jackets put together a seventh inning rally that cut the lead by two, but State ultimately fell short, 5-2.

Post Game Records
WVSU: 10-13, 2-2 MEC
Concord: 13-11, 1-3 MEC

Game 1 - WVSU 5, Concord 0
Emele Clark opened the game with a lead-off infield single, advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored when Avery Contreras put the ball in play. The defense wasn't able to record the out on Clark, 1-0. The lead was frozen there for the next three innings, but in the top of the fourth, Addi Dillow sent the ball into center field which scored Clark and Kerigan Moore, 3-0.

State plated two more runs in the top of the fifth when Kristabella Carte sent a rocket into right field which went through the legs of the right fielder and went all the way to the wall. Carte was credited with an RBI single and she was standing on third base after the error. Carte was thrown out at home and on a designed double steal play by Concord to end the inning.

The Mountain Lions mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles to open the inning, but the next batter grounded into a fielder's choice and the next two batters grounded out and lined out to shut the door.

Autumn Thompson grabbed her sixth win of the season while striking out three and inducing 12 ground outs. Clark went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs. Dillow went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Carte hit 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI.

Game 2 - WVSU 2, Concord 5
Neither team was able to score through the first four innings of play. The Mountain Lions knocked a hit in the bottom of the second but she was cut-down on a steal attempt. Another hit later, and Autumn Hall induced a double-play to end the inning while facing the minimum. She induced another double play in the bottom of the fourth that took down a runner who boarded via bunt single.

Concord finally broke the ice with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. They then added four insurance runs in the following innings.

Thompson walked to open the top of the seventh and then was replaced by Sydney Shamblin on the base path. Emma Pauley stepped up and knocked a triple down the right field line, 5-1. Two outs later, Kaitlyn Cabral picked up her fifth RBI of the season when she crushed a double to right center, scoring Pauley. The rally ended two batters later though as Cabral was thrown out on a Kerigan Moore fielder's choice.

Pauley went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Cabral was 1-for-3 with her RBI double. Emele Clark picked up her 21st stolen base of the season.
