State drops a pair of games to Cedarville

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State softball (8-10) dropped a pair of games to Cedarville (7-16) on Wednesday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field. WVSU was shutout in the first game, 4-0, before coming up short in the second game, 5-3.

Game 1: Cedarville 4, West Virginia St. 0, Final/7

Autumn Thompson tossed a one-hitter through four innings while holding Cedarville scoreless. Meanwhile, West Virginia State hit four singles in the first four innings. Unfortunately, none of those base hits produced a run for WVSU.

Cedarville broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth by scoring on a ground out, 1-0. CU added a second run in the inning with a RBI-single up the middle, 2-0.

Cedarville tacked on a third run in the sixth inning with another RBI-single up the middle, 3-0.

In the top of the seventh, CU scored on a double to the gap in right center, 4-0, before West Virginia State went to bat for the last time. Clarke Moore singled up the middle to leadoff the bottom of the seventh. Two ground outs followed with Moore advancing to second base before the second out. Autumn Hall walked to put two on base before another ground out finalized the contest.

Game 2: Cedarville 5, West Virginia St. 3, Final/7

West Virginia State briefly held the lead in the second game of the afternoon. Autumn Hall did well to keep Cedarville off the scoreboard through three innings. In the bottom of the third, Autumn Thompson drove in Emele Clark from second base with a single to left field, 1-0. Clark reached base with an infield base before she stole second.

The lead was relinquished in the top of the fourth. A single followed by back-to-back doubles allowed two runs to come across, 2-1. An insurance run was then added on a costly throwing error, 3-1.

Two more runs were tacked on by CU in the top of the fifth. Another pair of doubles produced one run before a wild pitch accounted for Cedarville's fifth run, 5-1.

WVSU rallied in the bottom of the seventh, but came up two runs short. Cassidy Cummings pinch hit and drew a walk. A throwing error by Cedarville's pitcher on a routine ground ball then allowed Cummings to score from first, 5-2, and Kerigan Moore to reach third base. Clark drove in Moore with a single to left field, 5-3, before the last two outs of the game were recorded.
