Softball splits midweek twinbill against Malone

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team split a doubleheader against the Malone Pioneers, taking a 2-1 win in an exciting nine inning contest before dropping a 10-7 slugfest that featured 26 hits by the two teams.

Post-Game Records
WVSU: 8-9
Malone: 12-4

Game 1 - WVSU 2, Malone 1 (9 innings)
Game one between the two teams was a pitcher's duel with WVSU defense erasing nine of the first 10 batters to come to the plate. That lone batter knocked a solo home run over the left field fence, 1-0. WVSU managed to get a hit in each of the first four innings, including the second inning when they had bases loaded with two out, but a strike out in the next at bat erased the opportunity. WVSU finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with a hit that eventually went foul, but the third baseman was ruled to have touched the ball in fair territory, pushing Emele Clark to second on the error. Dillow laid down a sacrifice bunt, which was fielded and then sailed over the first baseman's head, scoring Clark.

Malone knocked two hits with two outs in the next half inning, but a ground out closed the door. Both defenses kept everyone at bay until the bottom of the ninth inning when pinch hitter Avery Contreras hit a sharp opposite field single into right field. Kaitlyn Cabral re-entered for Contreras and promptly stole second. A Clark ground out pushed Cabral to third. Dillow came up clutch in the next at bat, bunting a single down the third base line, but the throw pulled the first baseman allowing Cabral to score, walking off game one.

Clark ended up 2-for-5 with a run scored. Pauley was 2-for-4. Autumn Thompson picked up her fourth win on the season, striking out five and only allowing the home run to score.

Malone's Mia Rose fanned 16 Yellow Jackets in the loss.

Game 2 - WVSU 7, Malone 10
State scored quick and often in the opening innings of game two, with Clark scoring on a Thompson double and Contreras scoring on Pauley's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. Malone quickly answered in the next half inning with two runs of their own, 2-2.

State ripped two base hits through the hole between short and third base with two outs in the bottom of the third. Clarke Moore then hit a shot into the left-center gap to score both Hall and Pauley, and she tried to take third when the relay throw went home, but got thrown out at third, closing the inning, 4-2.

WVSU added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a Contreras come-backer scored Clark. The relay came to the plate and her throw to third went awry, allowing Dillow to score, 6-2.

Malone cut the lead in half in the next half inning with a double and a single, 6-4. The Pioneers eventually tied it up in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded walk and a single in shallow left field, 6-6. A Cabral walk and wild pitch set up sac bunts by both Kerigan Moore and Clark to score Cabral.

Malone exploded for five hits and four runs in the top half of the seventh. All five hits were singles, 10-7. WVSU went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Clark, Clarke Moore and Kerigan Moore each had two hits in the game. One of Clarke Moore's hits was a double. Only two of Malone's 16 hits went for extra bases.
