Softball splits Day 3 of UNC Pembroke Invitational

PEMBROKE, N.C. – West Virginia State defeated Felician 9-5 then was shutout against the host UNC Pembroke Braves, 4-0 in the third day of the UNC Pembroke Invitational. WVSU accrued eight hits against the Golden Eagles but could only manage two against Braves pitching.

Game 1: WVSU 9, Felician 5
Emele Clark ripped a triple to left field right off the schneid then scored on the next at bat with a sacrifice bunt by Addi Dillow. Autumn Thompson then hit a double to center, advanced on a wild pitch then scored when Emma Pauley reached on a throwing error. 

Felician tied the game up in the top of the second inning. 

In the bottom of the second, Kaitlyn Cabral ripped a shot into left field that cleared the fence and put the Yellow Jackets up for good.

Neither team scored in the third. Cabral ripped a sharp shot down the right field line that stayed inside the fence. Cabral ended up making it all the way home for her second home run of the game. Kerigan Moore got aboard after a bunt single and a pair of stolen bases put her on third for Clark who hit her second single of the game, scoring Moore. A stolen base put Clark on second base for Dillow. Dillow hit a double, scoring Clark and chasing the Felician pitcher, 6-2. 

Felician scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. WVSU answered with a Dillow two-RBI double that scored Clark and Moore. Dillow came around to score when Pauley boarded base on a fielding error for the second time in the game. Felician didn't score in the top of the seventh, giving State their first win of the season. 

Dillow batted 2-for-2 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run. Clark went 2-for-3 with three runs, and Cabral was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two home runs, and two runs. Kaliegh Murphy got the win in the circle with five innings pitched, fanning five. 

Game 2: UNCP 4, WVSU 0
Clark led off the game with a single to left field and stole second. Thompson singled to right, advancing Clark to third, but both runners were stranded when the next two batters struck out. State had another opportunity in the top of the fourth inning when Kristabella Carte walked to lead off. She eventually got thrown out at home on a Cabral fielder's choice, keeping State off the scoreboard. UNCP broke onto the scoreboard in the fifth on an RBI single.

Avery Contreras boarded via catcher's interference and Clarke Moore walked, but neither runner advanced past second. UNCP picked up three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and State went down in order in the top of the seventh.

State will play a three-game series against Emory & Henry starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m.
