Baseball wraps up Wilson Tobs College Classic with another win against Lock Haven

WILSON, N.C. – West Virginia State baseball (4-4) shutout Lock Haven (2-2) by a final score of 6-0 in the final game of the Wilson Tobs College Classic on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets suffered a pair of defeats to Jefferson late Friday night and early Sunday afternoon to go 2-2 at the tournament.

Game 1: Jefferson 14, West Virginia State 1, Final/9

Immediately after winning a 12-9 slugfest against Lock Haven, the Yellow Jackets faced a fresh Jefferson squad for a second nine-inning game on Friday night. The Rams put their ace on the mound, Jem Sisco, who struck out 13 batters in five innings. State earned one run off him courtesy of a solo shot by Tyler Overaitis in the fourth inning.

Jefferson's bats were as potent as its arms. The Rams had already racked up seven runs by the time Overaitis put WVSU on the scoreboard. They tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth, 8-1, before adding six runs to their tally in the eighth inning, 14-1.

Caleb Lafunor racked up seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings on the mound. He was solid until the eighth inning when he gave up a double that allowed two runs to score.

Game 2: Jefferson 8, West Virginia State 3, Final/9

The Yellow Jackets actually held the lead up until the eighth inning against the Rams. State went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Ryan Kay drew a walk with the bases loaded, 1-0, before Nathan Paulsen drove in two runs with a single to center field, 3-0.

Chris Morris did not allow a run to be scored on his watch until the sixth inning. A two-run homer by Jefferson's Josh Lopez cut the lead to one run, 3-2.

The Rams took the lead in the eighth inning with two RBI-hits, 4-3. They added four unearned runs in the ninth with a three-run goner and a RBI-single.

Game 3: West Virginia State 6, Lock Haven 0, Final/9

Ayden Hodges picked up his first win as a Yellow Jacket after earning the start and tossing six scoreless innings. He only gave up two base hits and struck out six Bald Eagles. Linden Carey, JT Fabian and Riley Vadasz tossed an inning each to preserve the shutout. Fabian got all three of his outs by strikeouts.

State went up 3-0 in the top of the first. Nate Paulsen batted in the first run with a single to left field, 1-0. An error by Lock Haven's shortstop then allowed Connor Fizer to score from third base, 2-0. Mike Huber brought Paulsen home for the third run with a single to right field, 3-0.

Michael Bittinger drove in two runs in the eighth inning, 5-0. He singled to center field with the bases loaded. Another run was scored by WVSU in the ninth inning when Tyler Overaitis doubled to right field and brought in Kyle Waters, 6-0.
