West Virginia State outlasts Lock Haven in 21-run slugfest

WILSON, N.C. – West Virginia State baseball (3-2) got caught up in a slugfest with Lock Haven (2-1) on Friday night at Fleming Stadium. The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the sixth inning and came out on top, 12-9.

Lock Haven was first to get on the board with an RBI-single in the top of the first, 1-0.

State captured the lead in the bottom of the first when two runs were scored on an error, 2-1. The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs in the half inning when Mike Huber homered to left field with Ryan Kay on base, 4-1.

The Bald Eagles cut the lead to one run, 4-3, with a double in the second inning that drove in two baserunners.

Kay singled to left field in the third inning to bring Connor Fizer home, 5-3.

A grand slam to center field by Lock Haven's Greg Cristino gave the lead to the Bald Eagles in the top of the fourth, 7-5. 

Chris Morris tied the score, 7-7, in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer to left field.

Lock Haven regained the lead, 8-7, with an RBI-double in the top of the fifth.

Nathan Paulsen launched a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the fifth to level the score once again, 8-8.

The Bald Eagles jumped back in front in the top of the sixth with an RBI-single, 9-8.

The Yellow Jackets gained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. A balk allowed Fizer to score the tying run, 9-9. Huber scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, 10-9. Paulsen scored an insurance run on a passed ball, 11-9.

Sophomore pitcher Noah Jordan made his collegiate debut for State in the top of the seventh and was lights out on the mound. He tossed three scoreless innings, allowing one baserunner on a single, with four strikeouts to earn a save in his first appearance.

The Yellow Jackets added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, 12-9. Kay doubled and Fizer was able to score on an error made by the left fielder.

Camron Lewis was credited with his second win of the season. He became the pitcher of record after entering the game with two men on base and no outs in the sixth inning. He forced a double play ball before striking out a batter to get out of a potentially dangerous half inning.
