WVSU drops two nine-inning games on Sunday

SALEM, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (2-2) fell to Walsh (1-0) and Salem (1-3) in two nine-inning games played at Frank Loria Memorial Field on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets faced strong pitching in a 7-3 defeat to Walsh before they were undone by a pair of errors in a 6-4 defeat to Salem.

Game 1: Walsh 7, West Virginia State 3, Final/9

The Yellow Jackets faced a tough starting pitcher, Nick Lallathin, in the first game of the day. Lallathin did not allow a run to be scored while he was on the mound for the opening six innings. He tallied eight strikeouts. Ethan Spolarich was responsible for the only extra base hit that Lallathin gave up, a double in the fifth inning.

Chris Morris got the start for State and was solid in four innings of work. He made one mistake when he gave up a solo homerun with two outs in the top of the second, 1-0.

The Cavaliers hit a second homer with two outs in the fifth inning. With two men on base, the Yellow Jackets were left down by four runs.

Three more runs were tacked on by Walsh in the top of the seventh. A walk with the bases loaded scored the first run before two more runners reached home plate on a single to right field, 7-0.

A reliever was brought in at the start of the next half inning. Morris tripled to left field off him and drove in both Michael Bittinger and Nathan Paulsen, 7-2. Mike Huber then brought Morris home with a single hit into left field, 7-3. The rattled reliever was able to get the third out two at bats later.

A more effective reliever entered the game for the Cavaliers in the eighth inning. He retired the side in order. In the ninth inning, he gave up singles to Spolarich and Morris with one out. The rally ended there with the next two Yellow Jackets returning to the dugout.

Game 2: Salem 6, West Virginia State 4, Final/9

Salem was first to score in the second inning. A sacrifice fly broke the deadlock before another run was walked in, 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets got one run back in the third inning. Kyle Waters hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Chris Morris from third base, 2-1.

The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. A wild pitch allowed one run to come across before a single drove in another run, 4-1.

Connor Fizer tied the score with one swing of the bat in the fifth inning. He belted his second goner of the season with two men on base, 4-4. Morris doubled to leadoff the inning before Ethan Spolarich reached base on a fielder's choice.

Two unearned runs scored by Salem in the eighth inning made the difference in the game. The go-ahead run was scored on an errant throw on a stolen base attempt. The insurance run was scored on another throwing error, 6-4.
