Yellow Jackets win big at Salem

SALEM, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's basketball (14-9, 9-6 MEC) traveled to Salem (4-19) on Wednesday night and came away with a resounding 98-56 victory. The Yellow Jackets shot 46 percent from the floor and grabbed 52 rebounds to cruise past the Tigers. 

KEY PLAYERS
  • Ashley Kerekes posted a season-high 23 points, making 10 shots from the field in 17 minutes played.
  • Destiny Fields nearly registered a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds.
  • Shelby Harmeyer recorded 14 points, including four three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was tight until the six-minute mark when the Yellow Jackets embarked on a 14-3 run that lasted until the buzzer. Destiny Fields led the charge with seven points, including the buzzer-beating layup that put WVSU up by eight, 22-14.
  • State ended the second quarter even stronger with a 15-3 run that began around the five-minute mark. Ashley Kerekes led the charge this time with seven points, including a three-point bucket. The Yellow Jackets led by 23 points, 55-32, at halftime.
  • WVSU increased its lead with 13 unanswered points in the opening three minutes of the third quarter. Kerekes kept her momentum going by scoring the first six points of the second half. Play evened out for the remainder of the third period to leave State with a comfortable 33-point cushion, 75-42, going into the fourth.
  • State did not let up in the fourth quarter and outscored Salem by a 23-14 margin. Ten different Yellow Jackets scored in the fourth to nearly reach the 100-point mark. 

NEXT UP

State will host Notre Dame College on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in a return to league play.
