Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Bryan Shepherd, Assistant Sports Information Director

Women's Basketball wins at home against NDC, 89-67

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – WVSU used a 12-2 run over a four minute span early in the second quarter to take command of what had been a back-and-forth affair through the first 13 minutes against the Notre Dame College Falcons inside the Walker Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon, 89-67. State took the lead at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter and never looked back.

State improves to 15-9 on the season, 10-6 in Mountain East Conference play, while NDC falls to 8-16, 5-12 in the conference. State moves into a tie with Charleston for fourth place in the conference since the Golden Eagles were idle in conference play. The Golden Eagles won a non-conference game against Salem this afternoon.

Anysa Jordan scored a season-high 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, and picked up her third double-double of the season, adding 10 rebounds. Shelby Harmeyer, Destiny Fields and Hallie Bailey were also in double-digit scoring for State. Harmeyer and Fields scored 12 each while Bailey tacked on 10. Emyah Fortenberry gathered 11 boards. Emily Anthony contributed seven assists.

As a team, State picked up 29 points off of 25 NDC miscues, 22 second chance points, and 20 points off fast breaks.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first quarter. State made 6-of-22 shots from the floor while Notre Dame shot 6-of-16 from the field. The Yellow Jackets made one more three-pointer than the Falcons in the opening 10 minutes. ZZ Russell and Shelby Harmeyer both made shots from behind the arc. Hannah Shriver's three-point bucket was the last basket made in the first quarter and gave WVSU a two-point lead, 18-16.

State pulled away with 10 unanswered points in the two minutes leading up to the second quarter's media timeout. Hallie Bailey completed a three-point play to start the run. Ashley Kerekes knocked down a three-pointer in between. Anysa Jordan capped the run by hitting a turn around jumper before making a layup to put her team up by 10 points, 31-21.

The remainder of the second stanza was played close to even. The Yellow Jackets outscored NDC by a point, 9-8, during the four-and-a-half minute stretch. Jordan was responsible for seven of the nine points dropped by State. WVSU led by 11 points, 40-29, when the halftime buzzer sounded.

The Yellow Jackets went on a 17-4 run over a five-minute span in the third quarter to go up by 20 points, 57-37, with 4:21 left on the clock. The dominant stretch was bookended by three-pointers from Shriver and Kerekes. In the last three minutes of the third period, State outscored Notre Dame by a 13-2 margin to gain complete control of the contest. Harmeyer, Jordan and Destiny Fields all knocked down triples in the final three minutes to give WVSU a commanding 27-point cushion, 70-43, going into the fourth quarter.

State took their biggest lead of the game with 3:22 showing on the clock when Jordan hit a triple, 84-56. State put in subs not long after and cruised to the 89-67 victory.

State will head to Elkins to take on the Davis & Elkins Senators on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
