West Virginia State wins handily at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's basketball (16-9, 11-6 MEC) won its third-straight game against Davis & Elkins (2-21, 1-16 MEC) by a final score of 78-48 on Wednesday night at the McDonnell Center. The Yellow Jackets are currently tied for third place with UC in the MEC standings.

Shelby Harmeyer and Anysa Jordan were the game's leading scorers with 18 and 15 points respectively. Harmeyer shot 4-of-7 from three-point range. Jordan grabbed 10 rebounds to register her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season.

Davis & Elkins went up by as much as eight points, 16-8, with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter. West Virginia State then cut the lead to four points, 18-14, by the end of the opening quarter. Shanley Woods dished to Emyah Fortenberry for a layup to score the last points of the first period.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the second quarter to turn the tables. They outscored D&E by a 24-6 margin. WVSU shot 50 percent from the floor and made 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Senators shot 15 percent from the field and missed their only three-point attempt of the second stanza. They committed nine turnovers under pressure from State. The result was a 14-point lead, 38-24, for the Yellow Jackets at halftime.

WVSU continued to dominate in the third quarter. State outscored Davis & Elkins by a 27-12 margin in the penultimate period. Most of the Yellow Jackets' points came from three-pointers and free throws. They drained four shots from behind the arc and sank 11 free throws to account for 23-of-27 points scored. Anysa Jordan led the scoring effort with 10 points. WVSU held a commanding 29-point lead, 65-36, going into the fourth quarter. 

The intensity lessened in the last 10 minutes of the contest. State posted 13 points while D&E put up 12 points. Neither side played particularly well. However, WVSU was still able to accomplish a 30-point margin of victory, 78-48, when the final buzzer went off.

The Yellow Jackets will host West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 24 for a 2 p.m. tussle next.
