WVSU picks up a convincing win at Salem

SALEM, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (16-6, 11-4 MEC) traveled to Salem (6-17) on Wednesday night and came away with a convincing 87-74 victory. The Yellow Jackets shot 62 percent from the floor and 44 percent from three-point range while holding onto the lead for an impressive 38 minutes.

KEY PLAYERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • During a nearly five-minute span early in the first half, State pulled away from Salem with a 16-4 run. Anthony Pittman led the way with six points and Antonio Carter capped the run with a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets led by 13 points, 22-9, at the conclusion of the run at the 11-minute mark.
  • The Tigers cut the lead to seven points, 36-29, with a 13-5 run late in the first half. The Salem charge ended with about two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
  • Nate Mims recorded six points, including two layups and a pair of made free throws, in the final two minutes before halftime to stunt Salem's momentum. State went into the break up by nine, 43-34.
  • The Tigers went on a 15-6 run early in the second half to pull back within three points, 53-50, of the Yellow Jackets. State responded with a 14-3 surge over the next four or so minutes to reestablish control of the game. Miguel Martinez and Kalil Camara both knocked down triples towards the end of the surge to help WVSU to a 14-point advantage, 67-53, around the 11-minute mark.
  • The momentum shifted back-and-forth again between the 11-minute and four-minute marks of the second stanza. Salem produced a 10-2 run before State clapped back with 10 unanswered points. Martinez scored half the points for the Yellow Jackets with a layup and a three-point bucket that gave them a 16-point cushion, 79-63, with just under four minutes to go.
  • The lead was cut to single-digits, 81-72, with less than a minute remaining in the contest. Camara made a quick layup before Martinez dunked off Pittman's steal to keep the score from getting any closer. Mims sank a pair of free throws for the final points of the game.
