Men's Basketball falls to Notre Dame College

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (16-7, 11-5 MEC) fell to Notre Dame College (12-11, 7-10 MEC) by a final score of 96-91 on Saturday at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets fell behind early and came close to catching back up on multiple occasions, but were ultimately unable to change the lead.

Fifth-year forward Anthony Pittman posted a career-high 37 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Senior guard Mahzi Thames recorded a season-high 20 points and dished out four assists. Junior forward Arthur Cox was the only other Yellow Jacket to score in double-digits with 15 points.

The Falcons went on a 15-4 run beginning at the 18-minute mark and lasting until the 13-minute mark in the first half. The result was a nine-point deficit, 17-8, for State to overcome in the early moments of the game.

The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to two points, 19-17, over the next three minutes with a 9-2 run. Arthur Cox, Nate Mims and Anthony Pittman each made a two-point bucket while Mahzi Thames completed a three-point play.

Coming out of the second commercial timeout, Notre Dame regained the momentum and kept it until halftime. NDC outscored WVSU by a 23-12 margin in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Pittman dunked with eight seconds left to close the gap to 13 points, 42-29, before halftime.

The Falcons extended their lead to 18 points, 49-31, in the opening 90 seconds of the second half. State responded with a 15-6 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to keep the game from slipping away. Pittman heated up with 10 points during the run, including a three-point bucket and a three-point play. The Yellow Jackets were left with a nine-point deficit, 55-46, to overcome in the remaining 16 minutes.

State's next big push started on the other side of the eight-minute mark. WVSU embarked on a 13-3 run that cut the deficit to two points, 73-71, with 4:15 left to play. Thames led the surge this time with seven points. He kicked off the run by draining a shot from behind the arc and ended it with a layup.

Notre Dame kept the lead by going on a 13-2 run over the ensuing two-and-a-half minutes. The minute and a half left after the Falcons' run was not enough time for WVSU to overcome a 13 point deficit,  86-73.

The Yellow Jackets will head to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, Feb. 21 for a 7:30 p.m. game next.
