GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University fell to Glenville State, 40-14, in Mountain East Conference play. WVSU, now 6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference, struggled to contain Glenville's offense, which tallied 484 total yards. The Pioneers improved to 6-4, 6-2 in the MEC.
Glenville struck first with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Garrett to Amari Colon-Brown in the first quarter. WVSU responded in the second quarter when Justin Pessoa scored on a 7-yard touchdown run, capping a 6-play, 67-yard drive. Glenville added a late field goal to lead 17-7 at halftime.
WVSU started strong in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 17-14 after Pessoa's 16-yard touchdown run, his second of the game. However, Glenville answered with three consecutive touchdowns, including a 44-yard quarterback keeper by Garrett and a 66-yard touchdown reception by Colon-Brown, to extend their lead to 37-14.
WVSU totaled 228 yards of offense, including 161 rushing yards and 67 passing yards, with Justin Pessoa accounting for both touchdowns on the ground. The Yellow Jackets managed 15 first downs but struggled to sustain drives against a Glenville defense that controlled the line of scrimmage. Defensively, LucRichard Rameau led WVSU with seven tackles, while Kameron Vargas contributed five tackles and two tackles-for-loss. Glenville, meanwhile, dominated offensively with 484 total yards, including 269 rushing and 215 passing, and held possession for over 34 minutes.
West Virginia State will close out the season on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a midday matchup against cross-county rival University of Charleston Golden Eagles at UC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
